UTM tags, briefly
What are UTM parameters?
Tags added to a link (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, and optionally utm_term and utm_content) that tell your analytics where a visit came from. They are read from the address the visitor lands on.
Which ones do I need?
utm_source (where the link is placed, such as newsletter or linkedin) and utm_medium (the kind of traffic, such as email or social) decide the channel. Add utm_campaign to compare campaigns with each other.
Why lower case?
Most analytics tools, ours included, treat "Newsletter" and "newsletter" as two different sources. Pick lower case and stick to it.
Should I tag links between my own pages?
No. A UTM tag on an internal link starts a new visit with that campaign, which overwrites the real source of the visit.
How is the channel predicted?
With the same rules our analytics uses to classify visits, for example utm_medium=email goes to Email and cpc to Paid search. Other tools use similar but not identical rules.
