Is it really GPTBot or Googlebot?
Any scraper can call itself Googlebot or GPTBot. Paste the IP address from your logs and we check it the way the crawler operators say to: against the IP ranges they publish, or by reverse DNS.
Crawlers we can verify
Only operators that publish a way to verify their crawler can be checked. Others may be real, but cannot be proven.
By published IP ranges
- GPTBot (OpenAI)
- OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI)
- ChatGPT-User (OpenAI)
- PerplexityBot (Perplexity)
- Perplexity-User (Perplexity)
- Googlebot (Google)
- Bingbot (Microsoft)
By reverse DNS, confirmed
- Google crawler (Googlebot, Google-Extended, Storebot) (googlebot.com, google.com)
- Bingbot (Microsoft) (search.msn.com)
- Applebot (Apple) (applebot.apple.com)
- Amazonbot (Amazon) (crawl.amazonbot.amazon)
- YandexBot (Yandex) (yandex.ru, yandex.net, yandex.com)
- Baiduspider (Baidu) (crawl.baidu.com, crawl.baidu.jp)
Verifying crawlers
Why verify a crawler?
Bad bots often borrow the names of trusted crawlers so they are not blocked. Before you allow, block or rate-limit a "Googlebot" or "GPTBot", check that its address really belongs to Google or OpenAI.
How does the check work?
First the IP is compared with the ranges that OpenAI, Perplexity, Google and Microsoft publish for their crawlers. If it is not in any of them, we look up its reverse DNS name and, for operators that document it (Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Yandex, Baidu), confirm that the name resolves back to the same IP.
It says "not verified". Is the bot fake?
Not necessarily: it may belong to an operator that publishes no IP list or DNS rule, such as many smaller AI crawlers. But if the user agent claims to be one of the crawlers we can verify and the check fails, treat it as an impostor.
Where do I find the IP address?
In your web server access log, it is usually the first field on each line. The AI crawler log analyzer shows the most active addresses for each crawler with a link to this check.
